TT centenary cover gets Surtees stamp of approval

A 'must have' set of memorabilia commemorating the 2007 Isle of Man TT centenary is getting the John Surtees seal of approval.

The seven times World Motorcycle Champion - who will make a guest appearance at the June 2-8 event - is to sign 1,000 copies of a nostalgic centenary stamp cover.

The collector's item features a stamp of one-time 'King of the TT' Stanley Woods rounding the Governor's Bridge hairpin on a works Velocette in the 1938 TT. It is post marked '10am, 28 May 2007' - exactly 100 years after the start of the first motorcycle TT race.

The Surtees-signed cover - which pictures the six times TT winner airborne over Ballaugh Bridge - has been produced by the Isle of Man Post Office to celebrate the centenary.

It is exclusive to the boxed TT Celebration Set which will also include: a hardback copy of the 2007 official programme, incorporating the race results; 'TT 2007', a day-by-day review of the centenary races by Mick Duckworth; a reproduction of the original 1907 TT programme, together with the timekeeper's notes; a numbered boxed set of the official 2007 TT DVD from Duke Video; and a pair of commemorative 50p pieces from the Isle of Man Treasury.

The Stanley Woods stamp is one of 10 produced by the Poost Office to commemorate the event. Other riders featured in the set include Bob McIntyre, Geoff Duke, Mike Hailwood, and Giacomo Agostini.

Woods, who won 10 TT races between 1923 and 1939 remained the undisputed 'King of the TT' for more than 25 years until his record was overtaken by Hailwood.

Pictured on the centenary cover along with Surtees are 1907 winners Harry 'Rem' Fowler and Charlie Collier and other early TT stars.

The boxed TT Celebration Sets, which cost £175, will be available from the Isle of Man Philatelic Bureau on 01624 698430 or online at www.iomttraces.com.

Surtees - who is to take part in the June 8 Parade of Champions - will also sign a limited run A3 poster featuring all 60 TT stamps issued by the Post Office since stamps commemorating the event were first introduced.
