BBC Sports Personality of the Year

I went to Birmingham for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year hoping to see both motorsport and motorcycling fully recognised by what it had contributed to the British sporting scene in 2007.

If you talk about sports persons being role models then you can’t have two better examples than Lewis Hamilton, who I had expected to win, and James Toseland. James not only retained his World Superbike title, but has had the courage, unlike certain other riders, to take up the ultimate challenge of the MotoGP Series.

I was a little disappointed that Lewis didn’t win, but the boxing lobby was just too strong. But if someone other than Lewis was to win it, I have no doubt that Joe Calzaghe was a worthy winner. It was good to see that the top spot was challenged for by two family teams, Joe and Lewis being supported by their fathers Enzo and Anthony.
