ON TRACK WITH HENRY SURTEES
Formula BMW

Surtees Jnr heads for The Ring

by John Surtees

Henry Surtees is following in his father’s tracks and heading for The Nürburgring.

Not the famous north circuit of 14.165 miles where Surtees Senior won on motorcycles and in sports cars and Formula 1 Grand Prix car to become a Ringmeister - but the modern Grand Prix circuit.

His opportunity comes courtesy of Formula BMW - which is staging one of the support events for the July 20-22 Formula 1 Grand Prix of Europe at the legendary circuit.

The FBMW timetable is:

Practice & Qualifying: Friday 20 July
Race 1: Saturday 21 July
Race 2: Sunday 22 July

"It is a massive challenge," says Surtees Snr. "Not only will he be driving for a new team - Mucke Motorsport - but also on a circuit he has never seen before.

"He will only have the opportunity of a 30 minute practice before entering qualifying. So there has been much time spent on the Playstation."

But, before leaving for Germany, Surtees JJunior will be competing in rounds 11 and 12 of the British Formula BMW Championship at Donington Park on July 14/15 in his regular Carlin Motorsport-engineered car.

Henry, 16, is in his first season of single seater racing after a successful championship-winning karting career and has established himself as one of the fastest in the Formula BMW UK Championship where - in spite of two events at which he lost the opportunity to score points - he currently holds second place in the Rookie Championship and fourth place in the Championship overall.
