Austrian postal service salutes F1 'greats'

Eight Formula 1 'greats' are featured on a commemorative set of stamps launched by The Austrian postal service.

The stamps, the latest in Österreiche Post's Formula 1 Legends Series, feature Gerhard Berger, Juan Manuel Fangio, Emerson Fittipaldi, Mika Häkkinen, Graham Hill, Phil Hill, Clay Regazzoni and John Surtees.

The drivers scored a total of 96 victories between them and captured 13 Formula 1 World Driver's Championships. Before switching to F1, Surtees also won seven World Motorcycle Championships.

The Surtees stamp shows the multiple World Champion at Spa in 1966 behind the wheel of the 3.0 litre V12 Ferrari 312. Surtees - who won the race - started from pole and set fastest lap in what was to be his last F1 race for the Scuderia.

The two parted company soon afterwards when politicking team boss Dragoni sabotaged his race plan for Le Mans.

Surtees went on to join Jochen Rindt in the Cooper-Maserati team and finished second in the World Championship.

The €4.40 sheets - total print run 400,000 - are available from the Österreiche Post online philately shop at http://app.post.at/shop/result.php

Surtees attended the launch of the stamps in Vienna along with fellow ex-Ferrari driver Berger.
