Today he divides his time between his family, a thriving property development business and motorsport activities and consultancy.
These have included the role of team principal for A1 Team GBR, Britain's entry in the A1 'World Cup of Motorsport', plus an influential role in the development of new facilities at Buckmore Park, the international outdoor kart circuit in Kent.
The developments include a state-of-the-art conference facility - which was opened by F1 supremo, Bernie Ecclestone - and an ambitious motorsport training and technology centre designed to take motorsport into the community.
John, is also a Vice President of the British Racing Drivers' Club, and works tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that Britain maintains its position at the hub of international motor sport.
He also devotes a considerable amount of time to initiatives designed to encourage up-and-coming British racing talent.
And when he's not in the office or track-side giving support and advice to the stars of tomorrow, he can be found riding and driving in historic events with the same supreme skill that made him an international motor sports hero.
